What to expect at an audition

The Rome Little Theatre is a volunteer organization.  As such, auditions are conducted so that veteran actors and those who are new to the stage all feel comfortable throughout the audition process.  No experience is necessary to audition at The Rome Little Theatre; the theatre welcomes new talent and all those interested in participating in a show are encouraged to audition.  Although each director may adjust auditions to suit his or her directing style, the following characteristics are generally common for all auditions:

Dry Reading
Those who audition are asked to go onstage (most often in groups of two or more) before a casting committee and others who are auditioning.  Each person auditioning is instructed to read from a provided script.  Usually a few pages are read at a time.  During an audition, you may be asked to return to the stage several times to read for a different role, read a different selection from the script, or read with a different partner or partners.  Throughout the audition process, the casting committee will formulate casting decisions based on many factors including: expression, projection, energy, stage presence, and clarity.
Singing
When auditioning for a musical, you will be asked to sing--sometimes it is a simple song such as "Happy Birthday;" other times, those auditioning for lead roles may be asked to sing a prepared piece.  If you do not feel comfortable singing, please speak with the director prior to auditions, express your comfort level, and decide if a musical is the right show for you.  If you prefer not to sing alone, often there are chorus parts in which your singing is part of a large group.
